Louisiana and New Orleans are well represented by the symbolic fleur de lis. Translated from French, this simply means "lilly flower".
America inherited the fleur de lis through its French roots that preceeded the Louisiana Purchase. The fleur de lis has a prestigious history as being a symbol of kings, worn by Crusaders into battle, and was an emblem of the flag of St. Joan of Arc.
Today the fleur de lis is on the flag of Acadiana, and is the symbol of the city of New Orleans.
Since Hurricane Katrina, the fleur de lis has been an emotional symbol of connection to New Orleans and is proudly displayed by those who support the rebuilding effort.
* Angelworks is dedicated to donating 10% of each and every sale toward post-Katrina rebuilding efforts. *
